One of my favorite parts of Clone Wars is the opening quotes that immediately follow the opening title. It’s a bit of a unique way to open a show and gives context to the episode ahead. Plus, I don’t know of anyone who would scoff at some words of wisdom.
For tonight’s blog post, I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of my favorites. More than a few of these really stand out not only in the realm of Star Wars, but for life in general. I picked my ten favorite quotes (which was surprisingly hard to whittle down) and listed them in episodic order after the jump.
So let’s take a look!
“Easy is the path to wisdom for those not blinded by ego.”
Season 1, Episode 3 – Shadow of Malevolence
I’m not sure if any path to wisdom is ever easy, but it’s made doubly hard by ego. After all, what can impede wisdom more than an over-inflated view of oneself?
“You hold onto friends by keeping your heart a little softer than your head.”
Season 1, Episode 7 – Duel of the Droids
This one hits home sometimes. And after reading it again recently when I started my most recent re-watch of Clone Wars, it became one I’ve tried to hold onto. Sometimes I fear that my own opinions or my tendency to stick to my guns comes at the cost of holding onto friends. And after reading this, I’ve tried harder to make an effort at letting my friends know that I appreciate them. Because those words and those feelings do matter. Just another little life lesson Star Wars can teach.
“Fear is a disease; hope is its only cure.”
Season 1, Episode 17 – Blue Shadow Virus
I’m always tempted to read this one in Christopher Walken’s voice, and replace one of the words with “cowbell.” But it very much does not say cowbell, and it’s quite a beautiful quote as it is. Fear can very easily be described as the absence of hope, right? If you don’t hope that things will be okay or that the future will be brighter, it’s very easy to become fearful. So what’s the answer to that? A healthy dose of hope. I make it sound far, far easier than it really is in only a paragraph, but the old addage is true: never lose hope.
“Searching for the truth is easy. Accepting the truth is hard.”
Season 2, Episode 15 – Senate Murders
I immediately think of Rey when I read this quote. So much of her story is about her search for where she comes from, and whether or not you think that backstory is important, her acceptance of that truth is one of my favorite aspects of the Sequel Trilogy. How often have you gone in search of the truth of something (of anything) only to find answer does not meet your expectations. Accepting that truth is incredibly hard, and some struggle with it for years if they ever get to a point of acceptance.
“Love comes in all shapes and sizes.”
Season 3, Episode 9 – Hunt for Ziro
This one is pretty common. But a wonderful reminder nonetheless. Respect others. Be kind. Show love. Be open to the idea of receiving love, even in the most unexpected places. The world needs more of that.
“Who a person truly is cannot be seen with the eye.”
Season 4, Episode 4 – Shadow Warrior
This maybe rides on the coattails of the previous quote a little bit. But that saying about not judging a book by it’s cover? It’s true. (All of it.) And remember, this goes for choosing to trust or befriend or love someone, but it can also be true in reverse. Going back to the last quote, be open to the idea of love and that it can come from anywhere or anyone. But also try to get to know a person’s heart and intent.
“Who’s the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?”
Season 4, Episode 6 – Nomad Droids
Of course I had to pick this one.
“When we rescue others, we rescue ourselves.”
Season 5, Episode 8 – Bound for Rescue
Have you ever felt really good about helping someone? Then you probably know what this quote is about. When you help someone or even just spread a random act of kindness, it doesn’t just help that one person. It’s perhaps equally good for us, as well.
“Never give up hope, no matter how dark things seem.”
Season 5, Episode 20 – The Wrong Jedi
We talked about this earlier, but this quote adds a bit to that previous discussion. No matter how bad the situation is, no matter how hopeless, no matter how down you are – never lose hope.
“Without darkness there cannot be light.”
Season 6, Episode 8 – The Disappeared Pt. 1
This one is deep. Not that the other aren’t, but this one is a little moreso than the others. And when you think about it, it’s true. Darkness exists because of there’s light, and the same is true of light. Without one, the other cannot exist. And so, if we apply this to life, what do we get? We can maybe learn a few different things: that without good, there cannot be evil. If there’s no right or wrong and everything just is, there is no darkness or light. And without bad times in our lives, we cannot appreciate the good times. If we never go through darkness, we can never appreciate the light.
